Community Engagement

We focus our community engagement around three global priority areas:

  • Education: Improving the quality and alignment of educational systems to ensure that the students of today are ready for the workforce of tomorrow.
  • Environment: Ensuring that everything Cummins does leads to a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.
  • Equality of Opportunity: Increasing opportunity and equity for those most in need.

Every Employee Every Community

Engagement is the underpinning of our responsibility to our communities – employees around the globe use their skills to make their communities better places to live and work. Cummins’ Every Employee Every Community (EEEC) program enables each employee to use at least four work hours to engage in their communities. Through EEEC, Cummins invests thousands of employee hours in community improvement projects around the world.

Community Involvement Teams

Employees engage through a global network of more than 200 Community Involvement Teams (CITs). These teams serve as liaisons to their communities and are the primary onsite coordinators for community involvement initiatives. CITs work with Cummins leaders, employees and community partners – nonprofits, governmental bodies, schools and businesses. Using tools such as a community needs assessment, CITs determine how to use employees’ skills and talents to tackle the biggest problems facing their communities.

Leadership Engagement

Over the years, we have found that direct leadership engagement in community projects often causes projects to take off; leadership disengagement frequently causes them to falter. To set the right direction, CEO Tom Linebarger asked that all leaders formally engage in Corporate Responsibility through a call to action that, "Leaders do not delegate Corporate Responsibility."

Our leaders strive to understand the issues our communities face by visiting, seeing and hearing firsthand the challenges that exist around the corner from our plants, offices and homes. They:

  • Lead and plan strategies for community projects
  • Directly engage in projects
  • Sponsor their local Community Involvement Team
  • Regularly recognize employees and teams for community work in staff meetings and conferences
